Traditional financial reporting makes use of long tables with many rows, requiring readers to manually check from one column of figures to another. When preparing the 2024–2025 Annual Financial Report, the main problem was how to show the total revenues of $510.95 billion without losing sight of the major trends or the changes at the individual category level.The information architecture was restructured using a Concentric Radial Model:
For the Central Anchor (Macro Totals): position the total revenue ($510,951M) and the net percentage change (+11.2%) at the very centre of the visual layout as the main point of focus.
For a quick overview of the major category net changes, break down the total growth into proportional sections of a pie chart (for example, Income Tax +10.3%, Other Revenues +31.6%, Pollution Pricing +29.0%).
For the Outer Concentric Arcs (a year-on-year comparison) we map each individual item (Personal, Corporate, GST, EI) onto two concentric tracks so as to enable a direct, radial comparison between the 2023–24 and 2024–25 values.
In enterprise data visualization, color should show meaning, not just look nice. The visual system uses a high-contrast dark palette made for executive presentations and published annual reports.
The Deep Navy Base (#0D233A) creates an official and organizational background which enhances the contrast between the fine data lines and the typography.
Coral Red Vibrant: This colour is used only in cases of an increase in net percentage (for example, an increase of 17.6% in Corporate Tax and 31.6% in Other Revenues) and in relation to the inner-ring growth wedges, thereby attracting the eye to the financial factors that are experiencing high growth.
The concentric track tokens feature a bold white ring for the figures relating to the current year (2024–25) placed over a more subdued gray ring (2023–24) in order to convey the idea of expansion without having to use text.
The rules on radial typography state that curved, monospaced tabular figures, when aligned along radial gridlines, remain highly legible even when viewed from an angled viewport.
To complement the radial data system, six lengthy commentary paragraphs from the original report were distilled into a single, high-impact executive summary:
"In 2024–25, total revenues grew across key sectors, led by a $16.6 billion (+7.6%) rise in personal income taxes from employment growth and a $14.5 billion (+17.6%) surge in corporate taxes driven by capital gains policy changes. Other notable gains included an $11.8 billion (+31.6%) jump in Crown corporation profits and investments, a $3.0 billion (+29.0%) increase in carbon pricing proceeds prior to its rate change, a $2.5 billion (+3.6%) gain in GST, customs, and excise duties, a $2.0 billion (+6.7%) increase in EI premiums, and a $1.0 billion (+7.9%) rise in non-resident income taxes."
Although it has been designed as a ready-made annual report for print, this radial framework can be smoothly adapted for use in interactive dashboard user interfaces, enabling users to invoke real-time data tooltips by hovering over each arc, to switch between fiscal years, and to dynamically filter the categories on tablet devices.
